Hurricane refuge areas transitioning from State schools to City parks

O‘AHU – To assist with restoring regular education operations to the eight State schools utilized as hurricane refuge areas, overnight shelters will open this evening at three City and County of Honolulu parks.
Effective 6 p.m. Sunday, August 16, Tropical Storm Lala shelter operations will transition to three City park locations. Those sites include:
- Booth District Park
- ʻEwa Mahiko District Park
- Kāneʻohe District Park
The seven current hurricane refuge areas will be shuttered at 5 p.m. today. Those locations include:
- Blanche Pope Elementary School
- Castle High School
- Kahuku Elementary School
- Kapolei High School
- Moanalua High School
- Nānākuli Elementary School
- Roosevelt High School
The Mililani High School shelter was closed at 3 p.m. today
“We are grateful to our State counterparts for providing these hurricane-resistant school facilities to our communities in their time of need,” said Mayor Rick Blangiardi. “As we transition into recovery from Tropical Storm Lala, we want to ensure keiki can resume a sense of normalcy and get back to their studies. Mahalo to the State Department of Education and the various staff who helped to facilitate these refuge areas, and a thank you to our park staff for organizing these district parks to provide one more night of housing relief.”
At the peak of operations, 247 people were at the hurricane refuge areas, with several dozen expected to transition to City parks Sunday evening. All locations are pet-friendly. Individuals should bring food, water, medications, and other essential items whenever possible, along with necessary supplies for their pets.
Indoor City park facilities, most botanical gardens reopening
Tomorrow, Monday, August 17, all City park indoor facilities (such as gymnasiums, rec buildings, and bathrooms) will reopen under their regular schedules.
Outdoor facilities, like pools and fields, will be assessed Monday morning to determine whether they are safe for public use.
Most Honolulu Botanical Gardens will reopen tomorrow, except for Wahiawā Botanical Garden, which sustained storm damage to its walkways.
