Speaking to training wing leaders and educators, Dr. Wendy Walsh, AETC chief learning officer, underscored that retaining competitive advantage against global pacing threats requires learning systems that move at the speed of operational relevance. Central to that shift is replacing arbitrary seat-time instruction with competency-based learning models that measure verified proficiency rather than calendar days.
"For generations, military progression has leaned on rigid skill tiers and classroom hours," Walsh said. "We have to ask the critical questions: Does advancing in skill level guarantee an Airman has the intermediate and advanced capabilities demanded by the modern fight? Moving to competency modeling means every graduate arrives at their operational unit having proven their technical and tactical mastery in realistic, hands-on scenarios."
Executing that vision requires modernizing the educational toolkit. AETC training wings are rapidly integrating artificial intelligence, extended reality, and synthetic learning platforms to provide realistic, high-repetition practice before students ever interact with live mission equipment. Notable advancements already taking shape include the development of an artificial intelligence weapons instructor course curriculum to produce specialized instructors, as well as the implementation of rigorous IEEE technical standards to capture learning data across virtual and augmented reality platforms.
At a recent multi-day continuous process improvement workshop, tech-forward Airmen demonstrated this agility firsthand. Instructional technologists and animators from Goodfellow Air Force Base and 2nd Air Force harnessed artificial intelligence to transcribe working group debates and instantly generate visual architecture diagrams by the close of each working day, creating live, interactive feedback loops that validated emerging operational concepts in real time.
Yet, as Walsh emphasized, cutting-edge software and synthetic environments cannot succeed without an equally modernized instructor cadre. The ongoing evolution focuses heavily on upskilling military training instructors, military training leaders and civilian faculty from traditional classroom lecturers into certified digital facilitators who understand learning engineering and can interpret student performance analytics to diagnose learning bottlenecks.
