Gov. Reynolds orders flags at half-staff in honor and remembrance of Borlaug Elementary School teacher and student

Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered flags flown at half-staff effective immediately until sunset on Monday, September 28, 2026, in honor and remembrance of Norman Borlaug Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Hannah Jorgensen and student Ahmed Osman, who died September 22, 2026, during a field trip at Lake Macbride. 

In a statement issued earlier this week, Governor Reynolds said: “Our hearts are heavy with the news of the tragedy at Lake Macbride. Kevin and I offer our deepest condolences to the families of Hannah Jorgensen and Ahmed Osman and ask that Iowans join us in prayer for their comfort and healing at this difficult time. This unimaginable loss touches the entire Borlaug Elementary community and Iowa City School District. Please know that Iowans across the state are standing with you in the difficult days ahead.” 

Flags will be flown at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be at half-staff on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state. 

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
